Your three choices:
1) You can become a gear in the enforcement engine.
2) You can humbly kiss butt for political influence.
3) You can make yourself a smaller target.

I) The developed world is becoming a much less friendly place. Battle lines are being drawn, not by you, but by those that have power and believe that allows them to do as they wish. We all know of enforcement officers that have bragged about being “kicked loose” by their fellow enforcers when they broke a law.
It’s them versus us, at least in the eyes of many. That culture is being encouraged as friendly neighborhood peace keepers are being militarized into what is effectively an occupying army. These occupation forces are being led to view everyone but their comrades as suspects.
Just how far this has progressed was made evident years ago when I was discussing a person accused of a crime witnessed by a single government official. The policeman who told me about it mentioned the other crimes they had added to the charges, “Since he did that he will have broken other laws too. He’ll be going up for a long time.” I said the guy accused by the official denied having done it and the officer looked surprised and then got angry “You wouldn’t believe a citizen over an official would you.” It was the first time I had heard the word citizen used as an angry curse word. He (and therefore likely his cohorts) had obviously bitterly spat the word citizen before. I’ve heard it used that way since, from others. I must note I’ve also heard more citizens using the word government as a swear word, also a them-vs-us mentality. This will not end pleasantly.
Martial law is frequently defined as a patrolling and enforcing of restrictive law by a nation’s own military. If the local constabulary is militarized with equipment and powers of citizen suppression it is the same thing. Semantics are not comforting if your family can become expendable pawns and targets.
We are the “Them” some of the “Us” hate. You can instantly become safer by becoming one of the “Us” by joining those with unjust laws, guns, and jails. As an individual you do have a choice.

II) An executive of a major corporation used his influence and a bit of money to help elect his country’s president. Once the victory was sure, the CEO sold a massive amount of his warrants and options in the company, many he had carried for years. As I recall he netted hundreds of millions $US on the sale. After the election tax laws were changed that would have greatly increased the taxes on his sale. I’m sure the timing was just a coincidence; still it’s nice to be friends with influential people.
A well planted seed of political contribution can grow to yield a crop of 30, 60, or a hundred million fold. Ask the banksters, they understand this form of gardening.
On the other hand you have cases like Martha Stewart. Very successful, very quickly in the public eye, and not involved in politics. Envy raised its head and the media and politicians ran to inflame the jealousies. Tried and condemned in the press as an insider trader (a very loose charge) she was acquitted by the courts. She still went to jail, almost everyone who reads papers believes it was for insider trading. In reality the charge they made stick was that she mislead an investigator. I’m sure you can think of politicians who have escaped with minor embarrassment from far greater crimes.
Martha Stewart was not only publicly successful, she was politically unconnected, and she was a large target. It goes without too much emphasis she was one of “Them” to authorities. She may be more careful now. If not expect another criminal or a civil case to jump up and bite her assets.
Climbing up Martha’s back may be the public relations boost an ambitious politico needs before running for a higher office. If a bully knocks a person down once, there will be a repeat performance; unless something dramatically changes how prior victims are perceived. Donations and verbal support are blood for the door posts and lintel of democracy, diverting agents of bureaucracy.
Nations are like hotels attached to casinos. Profitability for management, and hence the rules to follow, flow from the gambling floor. Play the game carefully, or start seeking a casino that usually deals your favorite game honestly. Spreading your risks through several appropriate nations/resorts protects you from becoming a dependable sucker.
If you want, you can choose to play management’s game at one casino and be protected – to a point.

III) There’s a third choice. Make yourself a smaller target. That is one of the functions of increasing your PT knowledge. You want to continue diversifying in as many ways as you can – including geographically. As Las Vegas or Macao will frequently inform you, it’s fun to learn new games.
If all your money is in real estate in your home town, in stocks and bonds held at a local brokerage, and in local personal and business bank accounts you present a large, tempting target. Any lawyer worth a gold plated titanium bar can evaluate you and develop a case against you. He can then freeze your assets so you can’t hire a quality defense lawyer. Oh, and then he can find someone to accuse you of something.
As a PT you may own land in another country. You may have hard to locate bank accounts (don’t talk about them) that need proof of felony fraud or equivalent to reveal an account’s balance, much less release your money to a ravenous attorney or government agency. You will know these strategies and many more. These all make you a smaller, less desirable target at home. That’s just being smart.
If you lack these things, today would be a good day to start. Plan a trip outside your country, try to open a very small bank account while there. If you encounter any difficulties, read our reports to find some simple answers and steps. Or start with a report or two and then travel, after selecting which hotels attached to casinos (countries) to visit.
Always do everything legally; that too makes you a smaller target.
